Haley Jonay, an 18 year-old singer/songwriter from Indianapolis, IN has performed in hundreds of venues for crowds from dozens to thousands. She released her debut album “Haley Jonay” in November 2014, and since her fanbase (who have self-proclaimed themselves as “Halos”) has skyrocketed. Her latest single “All the Bright Places” is her biggest release to date, with 137,000 streams on Spotify and counting.

Haley was so sweet to give me some of her time for an interview! Check out all of her thoughtful and wonderful words below and be sure to give her music a listen.

1. Tell us about your music. What genres do your songs fall under and which genres do you enjoy listening to?

H: My entire life I’ve been obsessed with all music. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite genre, because they’ve all been so influential on me as an artist. I’ve always described my music as a melting pot of genres. If I had to narrow it down, I’d say it’s singer/songwriter acoustic pop.

2. Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

H: I would have to say Taylor Swift is my biggest musical inspiration. She is an undeniably incredible songwriter, extremely intelligent business women, captivating performer, and most importantly a truly good person. I actually had the amazing opportunity to meet her last September. She was super genuine and down-to-earth.

3. What has been the highlight of 2016 for you and your career so far? Where do you see your career going in the future?

H: 2016 has been the most incredible year for my career so far. It’s difficult choosing just one highlight, but I guess that’s a brilliant problem to have. I’d say my song “All the Bright Places” has been a huge light source for my biggest highlights; everything from the beautiful fan art inspired by the song, to it hitting 137,000 streams on Spotify. Since the beginning of my career, my ultimate goal has been to connect with people through my music. “All the Bright Places” has definitely helped me achieve that goal. Nothing means more to me than someone tweeting me and saying that my song brought them joy or made some kind of difference in their life. That is the ultimate dream. It always has been, and always will be.

I’ve given up predicting the future, because I’ve found that the most extraordinary things that have happened to me were completely unforeseen and unplanned. When I wrote “All the Bright Places” on my piano one August morning, the thought of it being listened to 137,000 times never even crossed my mind. Of course success is always the hope, but my passion for my craft is what guides me. As long as I work hard, stay positive, and keep an open heart and open mind, anything is possible.

4. Will your song “All the Bright Places”, based on Jennifer Niven’s book, be featured in the upcoming adaptation of the film?

H: At this point, no, but it would absolutely be an honor. I’m a huge fan of the book. It is an important, beautiful, life-changing, masterpiece. So to have my song featured in the film adaption would be a dream come true. I’ve had countless fans of the book tell me they want it in the movie adaption, and that alone means the world to me.

5. Who is your fan cast for the All the Bright Places movie?

H: I think the lovely Elle Fanning is the perfect choice for Violet. She’s an incredibly talented actress, and looks extremely similar to how I first pictured Violet when I read the book. Finch is such a complex and beautiful character. I think Nick Robinson would be an excellent choice to portray him.

6. Can you give us any song titles or hints about your next album and what it will be like?

H: I wish I could! I’m trying to keep the element of surprise, but when I release details you’ll be one of the first to know. What I can say is that it is the best music I’ve ever written, and I’m beyond excited for the world to hear it.

A big thank you to Haley Jonay for the interview! Be sure to check out her music, it’s as lovely as she is.
